A look back at Detect & Protect III - 11 June 2026

Review: Detect & Protect III

We look back on a successful third edition of Detect & Protect, where it once again became clear how complex and topical the challenge around drone detection and security is. Drone activity in restricted areas and no-fly zones appears to occur more frequently than many people realise.

Although actual security incidents are relatively rare, the core of the challenge lies in being able to quickly distinguish between harmless flights and potential threats. In most cases, these are benign flights, often carried out by operators who are unaware of the applicable airspace rules. That is precisely why it is becoming increasingly important to recognise that small group of situations that do require further follow-up.

Moreover, the time available to assess a situation is extremely limited. Drone flights are often short, leaving operators with sometimes only 30 to 40 seconds to determine whether action is required. This makes rapid, reliable, and well-informed threat recognition essential.

“The challenge is not whether we can detect a drone, but whether we can identify a threat and react in time.”
— Theo de Vries, Director of Unmanned Valley

During Detect & Protect III, various speakers and demonstrations showed how combining technologies such as radar, RF detection, acoustic, and optical sensors leads to a more complete and reliable picture of what is happening in the airspace. This integrated approach helps to better distinguish between harmless activity and potential risks.

The role of passive radio detection was also extensively discussed as a promising development within counter-drone technology. In the future, this technique can contribute to even more effective detection and improved situational awareness.

Detect & Protect III underlines the importance of collaboration and innovation. Only by combining knowledge, technology, and partnerships can we work towards a safe and future-proof airspace.

We look back with pride on an inspiring event and would like to thank everyone who contributed: all speakers, visitors, demonstrators, partners, suppliers, and our moderator.

Detect & Protect IV will take place on 10 June 2027.
